There exists an early fork of Debian for doing contesting:

Admittedly you could probably do quite a bit more with a Knoppix style
distro, but you have to watch your hardware requirements.  It's been my
experience that most hams are going to want to run this stuff on older
hardware, not the family powerhouse.

The soundcard radio modem is going to be kind of tricky in its current
state.  You'd have to do your PnP stuff to get the address of the sound card
and then modprobe the proper module.  Also, soundmodem modules only exist
for a handful of soundcards.  I am definitely looking forward to kernel 2.6
when they move this out to userland.
