I think you will find that a lot of hams have had similar problems not only
at contractor sites but also at the DMV offices. I had a very similar
experience to KI4TOK. The clerk finally found the procedures in a binder
full of special processing but she didn't understand what she was reading.
She finally said her information said I needed to have something to show I
was a ham. I asked what and she didn't know. I showed her my license and
she barely looked at it obviously not knowing what it was. If I remember
correctly she tried to charge me the vanity charge at some early point but
not sure.

When my wife went to get her license they would not let her get a ham tag
because the car was registered to me. I don't know whether or not that is
correct but we know several XYL's who got their ham plates even though the
car was not registered in their name - all they had to do was show their
license.

That's the personal experiences but I've heard others talk of similar
problems.

Just take your ham license with you and don't take no for an answer.

K4HM - Hank

You must have gotten someone who was new. The ham plate program has been
around for years, and DMV staff is intimately familiar with that plate. I
used to be the lawyer for the registration section of DMV, and I was closely
involved in all license plate issues.

Of course, almost all of the tag offices are agencies run by private
contractors, with varying levels of experience. If you went to one of the
tag agencies, you may have gotten someone who was not completely up to speed
on what was available. There are tons of special plates for just about
every special interest group.

And Rob, knowing what it costs to produce the amateur plate, I have mixed
feelings about eliminating the additional $10 fee. If we don't pay the
cost, the taxpayers will. This plate, like any vanity plate, requires a
special setup. The additional fee just about covers the cost.

BTW, the profits made on the vanity plates (and there is a profit due to the
higher fees) are used to fund the roadside beautification and wildflower
planting programs.

I just got a "new" (to me) truck and had to do some digging but found
that NC does indeed have Amateur Radio license plates available. They
aren't well-advertised on the NC DMV web site, and they aren't even well
known by the workers at the DMV office. I learned about it from the
ARRL web site so was able to be persistent at the DMV office. At first
she didn't want to give them to me because they weren't showing up in
the computer but she asked around and found the right place to look and
I got it anyway.

Cost is $10 more than a regular registration and includes your
callsign. Regular personalized tags with a callsign would have been
about $30 over regular price so this was cheaper. They do allow a
suffix if you have more than one car with amateur radio tags.

Yeah this has happened about 5 or 6 times. Then some enterprising state
senator/rep looking to make a name for himself
comes along and pushes through a bill to take advantage of "this
untapped revenue source".

I've had KB4TYE on my license plate as a vanity plate for about 8
years now, but just last week went to the tag office to switch it
to a true amateur radio plate. I had originally gotten the vanity
plate since I wanted the image of the Wright Flyer on my tag too.
I had been thinking about switching to the amateur radio plate for
a while but the extra $30 fee this year ended up being the straw
that broke the camel's back (didn't it go up recently?). I was afraid
I'd need to turn my current plate in and get a temporary plate, but they
let me keep my current plate (vanity with callsign) while waiting
for my radio plate. It should be here sometime this week they
said, so hopefully I can get it on soon.

Cheers,
Tanner
