We have to focus on building links instead of stations. CSMA does not work when there are over the horizon stations. The trick to make a working amateur radio packet network is to build point to point links and switches. So picking a free for all channel is counter productive. Everybody needs two links or more. No collisions. The second issue is to keep the amateur radio network separate from the professional network, at least in terms of data flow. Let's start with chat. I never played much with TheNET. I don't recall BPQ having convers built<br>

As far as I know, around here the only packet is APRS with a tiny<br>
smattering of WinLink gateways. Interestingly, a few months ago I went<br>
looking to see if there were any of the old networks still around and<br>
came across the guy who ran the big node NE of Raleigh selling off all<br>
his gear.<br>

Perhaps we should pick one of the old packet channels, say 145.03 (I<br>
suggest only because I have an old xtal rig with that in it from back in<br>
Ohio) and build up a little test network. Maybe from there we can<br>
upgrade to more modern technologies to get a backbone going again.<br>
