Aaron S. Joyner - Sr. System Administrator in the Site Reliability
Engineering (SRE) group at Google
Abstract:
Monitoring is a part of the bread and butter of a SysAdmin's toolkit,
but unfortunately it often doesn't get the attention it deserves. In
this talk, we will attempt to provide a fresh look at monitoring from a
system-agnostic perspective (agnostic of both the monitored and
monitoring systems) while still being practical, and include thoughts
on ways your monitoring can help make you more productive.
We will start by introducing and clarifying conceptual ideas such as
whitebox vs blackbox monitoring, historical vs realtime data, and
monitoring vs alerting; move on to how to convince developers to
implement good whitebox monitoring; and may even include a few tips on
how to do it yourself if necessary. We will also include some insights
gained from arduous experience about what types of notifications do and
don't work in small to medium sized teams of SysAdmins.
Biography:
Aaron S. Joyner is a Sr. System Administrator in the Site Reliability
Engineering (SRE) group at Google. He has been working as a SysAdmin
for more than 12 years at companies such as Global Knowledge,
Intrex.net, and MWG Biotech. When living in Raleigh, he was actively
involved with the Triangle Linux Users Group, serving on the steering
committee as SysAdmin in 2004-2005, and giving talks on DNS for NC*SA
and TriLUG. Since joining Google in 2005, he has helped to maintain
their internal DNS infrastructure; been primarily responsible for
designing, implementing, and supporting Google's serial console
systems; and most recently been leading a team of SREs responsible for
supporting some of the production authentication systems.
