There are also IMAP and mailbox implementations that can reduce this
sluggishness.  For example, many Unix or Linux systems include a mail
subsystem with the outdated "mbox" format -- this is a plain-text,
behemoth file with no indexing and will be VERY slow at 500 MB.=20
However, you can switch to something like "mbx" (similar to mbox but has
indexing to greatly increase speed) or Maildir (where emails are stored
in separate files to avoid the huge file syndrome).  This backend
mailbox format switch is definitely the first step to improving IMAP
performance
