why are the current UPSs so light?

That was one of my guesses too. This would be a step forward. The
alternate hypothesis is that the number of batteries is reduced - this I
don't want.

>From what I can see, the APC 700 weighs 30lb, the APC RS1000 weighs 23 lbs
(more power but lighter) and both have two 7AH 12V batteries, which last
less than 5 mins at the rated power (450W and 600W respectively) just
enough to shut down gracefully.

I had expected with the weight that the APC 700 had four batteries and
that the APC 1000 being lighter must have had only two and hence a greatly
reduced time that it could provide power. Now I find that both only
have two batteries (half the number of batteries I thought) and that all
the weight in the APC 700 must be iron.

I found from the APC website that Staples sells the replacement batteries.
I thought it would be nice if I could buy the UPS and it's batteries from
the same store so called up Staples again to find that they don't stock
and won't get batteries in. If your batteries are dead they want you to
buy a new system. So Staples sells the UPS, but doesn't support them.
