case anyone else on the list can benefit or feels like starting a
discussion.

Liyun,

I whole-heartedly recommend the Cyrus imap server.  250 users should be
very do-able on a generic linux box or an older Sun (I have almost 400
accounts on a Sun Enterprise 250).  Just make sure you have 2+ GB of RAM
and, if possible, raid 1 for your spool disks.
