I was poking around my samba server today and noticed some wierd things going on in /var/log/messages. :
Sep 6 13:41:19 backups smbd[15444]: [2006/09/06 13:41:19, 0] lib/util_sock.c:write_socket(455)
Sep 6 13:41:19 backups smbd[15444]: write_socket: Error writing 4 bytes to socket 5: ERRNO = Connection reset by peer

Come to find out that Windows XP does some kind of non-standard smb port broadcast which confuses smbd therefor causing this error, in my case it was not a speed issue but I just dont like errors in my logs. I had to run an iptables script to block the random port that WinXP was talking to.
good luch.
