Occupational Summary:
Oversee management of all departmental Linux servers and department 
network services under the general direction of the Economics Department 
Chair and Computing Committee. In collaboration with faculty and staff, 
develop vision for departmental computing services to provide 
state-of-the-art computing environment on Linux, MacOS and Windows 
platforms that serves the needs of faculty, students and staff. Develop 
connections to other social science areas to enhance Linux/Unix based 
services and exploit potential returns to scale. Potential for larger IT 
management role both within the department and across units.
Work Performed: Work with faculty, staff and students to assure highest 
quality department-level IT support serves are provided to all users in 
a flexible and evolving multi-platform, integrated computing environment 
that spans Linux, MacOS and Windows. Assure users have access to state 
of the art services so they can efficiently and effectively fulfill the 
research and teaching missions of the university.

Initially, manage all Linux servers, Linux-based high performance 
computing cluster, department network and private subnets. Assure all 
back-end services including backup services and security services are 
robust and meet the needs of users. Train IT staff to take over all 
back-end, network and server management functions.

Collaborate with departmental users, departmental IT staff and other 
campus IT support providers in development of a strategic vision for 
departmental IT services. Proactively identify emerging technologies 
that are likely to enhance the IT environment for users. Identify 
potential future constraints and research solutions to assure continued 
services at the highest quality. Regularly update the vision in light of 
emerging needs and new technologies.

Collaborate with other department-level IT support units on campus to 
develop enhanced services for users in Economics and outside Economics. 
Work with relevant Arts and Sciences and University-wide IT groups and 
committees to assure consistent level of services and technical support, 
maintenance of appropriate standards and minimize duplication with 
services provided outside the department. Represent the department and 
department users in interactions with other campus providers.

Potentially, although not necessarily immediately upon starting this 
position, oversee all department-level IT infrastructure; manage and 
supervise IT staff supporting Linux, MacOS and Windows users; assure all 
staff are fulfilling our goal of providing exceptional customer-service 
oriented support at the highest standard; develop evidence-based 
reporting for planning and budget recommendations; monitor all 
expenditures and prepare proposals for capital and operating budgets; 
and recommend personnel actions including hiring, performance 
appraisals, promotions and vacation schedules.

MINIMUM HIRING SPECIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/TRAINING
At least a Bachelor's degree in mathematics, statistics, computer 
science, or related field or equivalent course work and technical training.

EXPERIENCE
At least 10 years experience in computer support environment that 
includes Unix systems administration, networking and desk-top support. 
Expert knowledge of Unix/Linux with at least 5 years of experience 
administering an OpenAFS/Kerberos 5 based Unix computing infrastructure.
Or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

SKILLS
Experienced Unix systems administrator and network services 
administrator. In depth knowledge of infrastructure services such as 
SunGrid clustering, Samba, Email (Sendmail/Postfix), Apache, MySQL, 
DDNS, DHCP, Networked Printing (CUPS), Firewalls, (IPTables), Private 
Subnets and Network Routing, NAT, and Network Security methods

Excellent knowledge of Windows and MacOS operating systems.

Customer-service oriented. Outstanding person skills, preferably with 
demonstrated ability to lead IT support team. Ability to develop vision 
for IT services in the future in a dynamic academic environment. 
Supervision, management and financial planning background preferred.
