National Trails Day is June 5.   I'll be at the REI/American Tobacco
Trial even mentioned in this e-mail.  I hope everyone can get a chance
to go to one of these locations on June 5!

TRIANGLE EVENTS SET FOR NATIONAL TRAILS DAY, JUNE 5,
2004

Raleigh  Several events are being held in the
Triangle to observe National Trails Day (NTD), a
nationwide celebration aimed at raising public
awareness of and appreciation for trails and
greenways.  This years NTD theme is Trails and
Health.A Natural Connection.   Governor Easley has
proclaimed June 5 as a National Trails Day for North
Carolina.

Events include:

1.  Eno River State Park, 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM.  
Contact:  Adrienne Wallace at Eno State Park 383-1686 
Project: Work on the Laurel Bluff Trail which will be
a new section of the Mountains to Sea Trail.  Bring
work gloves and water.  Limited to 25 volunteers.

2.  Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail (FMST) at
Falls Lake, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM.  
Contact: Jeff Brewer (919) 789-0501.  
Project: Installation of a new twenty foot bridge and
a new trail kiosk.  Tools needed: Hammers, loppers,
and handsaws.  Bring a bag lunch and plenty of water. 

Location:  Upper Barton Boat Ramp -- from 440 beltline
in North Raleigh, take the Six Forks exit North. 
Follow Six Forks through North Raleigh towards Highway
98 (10 miles).  Before reaching Highway 98, the Falls
Lake Boat Ramp will be on the right.  We will meet
there and then move on to project sites.  From Durham,
take Highway 98 from US-70 up to Six Forks, turn
right.  The Falls Lake boat ramp is 0.6 mile on the
left.

3.  REI & The American Tobbaco Trail, 8:30 AM to 1:00
PM.  
Contact Person:  Heather Phillips (919) 806-3442.  
Project:  Trail maintenance on the ATT in Chatham
County.

Location:  Meet at REI in Durham at the Streets of
Southpoint at 8:30 AM before car- pooling to the ATT
in Chatham County.

4.  Triangle Trail Blazers - 10K walk/run in Clayton,
NC
Contact: Pat Graeber  (919) 847-1075 
Event Details: The event is a 10k (6.2 miles)
non-competitive walk on natural trails through pine
and hardwood forests over rolling terrain highlighted
by streams and rock formations. Trails are accented by
exhibits and displays depicting the ecology of a
managed forest. There is no fee for participating, but
there will be a commemorative award available for a
fee of $7.00. The walk is sanctioned by the American
Volkssport Association and a fee of $3.00 will be
charged for those requiring IVV Credit. Lunch will be
offered at family prices. This event will be held rain
or shine.

Location: Take I-40 East from Raleigh, NC to US 70
East (Exit 306). Go to second light and turn left on
Guy Road. Cross RR tracks, go the stop sign and turn
right on E. Garner Rd. Go 2 miles to the entrance of
the park on the left. Take the entrance road to the
parking area. Start point is the picnic shelter.

5.  Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve / Town of Cary
Contact: Gigi Wainwright (919) 387-5980  2-4pm
Event: Please bring work gloves and dress
appropriately (we will work in the rain). The host of
the workday will contact you if you should bring any
special tools. Light refreshments will be provided.

Location: From the intersection of Route 40 and Route
64 & 1, located southwest of Raleigh, head southwest
on Route 64 & 1. Exit at Tryon Road. Continue on Tryon
Road to the 3rd traffic light which is the
intersection of Tryon Road and Kildaire Farm Road.
Turn right onto Kildaire Farm Road. Hemlock Bluff's
entrance will be 1 mile from that intersection down on
the right.

6.  Morrisville Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources
Department National Trails Day and Park Ribbon Cutting

Event: We will be haveing a ribbon cutting ceremony to
our new greenway trail and ball field complex.
Visitors can walk the greenway and learn about the
process of creek restoration, etc. We will then have
baseball games all day on our new fields. A concession
stand will be open to the public during the day's
events.

Location: I-40 Aviation Parkway exit. Head west to
Chapel Hill Rd take a left. Take a right on
Morrisville Parkway, the park entrance is about 1 1/2
miles on your right. Morrisville Community Park.

7.  People for Parks and Town of Cary Parks,
Recreation & Cultural Resources

Event: 10am - Noon The Town of Cary will be dedicating
Phase III of the Black Creek Greenway. Activities such
as building and installing bluebird boxes and planting
native flowers will be sponsored by People for Parks.

Location: From I-40 take the Harrison Ave exit (# 287)
and head south on Harrison Ave. Turn right onto NW
Maynard Road. The Black Creek Greenway parking lot
will be on the right across the street from Godbold
Park.

8. Jordan Lake State Recreation Area
Contact: Susan McBean  (919) 362-0586

Event: This event celebrates the opening of the first
segment of the New Hope Trail at Jordan Lake State
Recreation Area. The celebration will begin at 11:30
AM at the New Hope Overlook trail head. Boy Scouts and
other trail supporters will be present. The ceremony
will end with a hike of part of the new trail. Please
contact Ranger Sue McBean for more information and to
reserve a spot.

Location: From Raleigh - Take U.S. Hwy 64 West toward
Pittsboro. Travel 8 miles west of Apex, NC. At the
second stoplight beyond (west of) Hwy. 55 / 64
intersection, turn left on SR 1008. Go approximately 3
miles on SR 1008. Turn right on S. Pea Ridge Rd., just
beyond the bridge and Ebenezer Boat Ramp. Travel 2
miles to the first road on the right, W.H. Jones Rd.
Turn right into New Hope Overlook. Make a right just
beyond the entrance station and the trail head is
located in the first parking lot on the right.
Remember - follow the brown signs leading to New Hope
Overlook.
