My Plextors (yes plural) are quiet as a mouse. I do have one yamaha, and it
is noisy. However, it is not on Linux so I don't generally use it.

I recently bought a Yamaha SCSI 40/16/10 CD-RW for under $200. It's a bit
noisy (though perhaps all CD-RW are this noisy), but I haven't had any
trouble with it. RedHat 7.1 auto-detected it, so configuration was trivial.
