I just looked up some articles I read while building a Mega-server last 
year.  The real skinny seems to be:
 - more writes than reads: RAID 1+0
 - more reads than writes: RAID 5

So a web server should be RAID 5, while a backup buffer should be RAID 1.  
If your database does a lot of writes, then it should be RAID 1 - if your 
database is fairly static and you do more lookups than modifications, then 
it should be RAID 5.
