[TriLUG] Mandrake 8.0->8.1 upgrade question

I seem to change computers often enough that I've NEVER actually done
a packaged upgrade of Linux (I've upgraded individual packages, of course).
I'm very selective about the packages that I install, so I always choose the
'expert' installtion (despite my decidedly non-expert status) and go through
the entire package list, selecting what I do/don't want.

So the question is:
What's the best way to perform the upgrade? I tried adding the new CDs
to Mandrake's "Software Manager" list, but when I try to upgrade the
packages (even if I select just one) I get an error that the packages
are "already installed"

If I boot the installer, will it remember what packages I installed and only
upgrade those packages? Or will I have to re-select all my packages again?
