I tried this, but it did not help.

Here is my lilo.conf file
The 1st boot image (label=linux) is what I use during boot, and
it is also the one that I removed the line you mentioned:

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
vga=normal
default=linux
keytable=/boot/us.klt
lba32
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
image=/boot/vmlinuz
	label=linux
	root=/dev/hda5
	initrd=/boot/initrd.img
	append=" quiet"
	vga=791
	read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.6-5mdk
	label=old_linux
	root=/dev/hda5
	append=" quiet"
	vga=791
	read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.6-5mdk
	label=old1_linux-nonf
	root=/dev/hda5
	read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.6-5mdk
	label=old2_failsafe
	root=/dev/hda5
	append=" failsafe"
	read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
	label=linux-nonfb
	root=/dev/hda5
	initrd=/boot/initrd.img
	append=" devfs=mount"
	read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
	label=failsafe
	root=/dev/hda5
	initrd=/boot/initrd.img
	append=" devfs=mount failsafe"
	read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2secure
	label=linux-2.2
	root=/dev/hda5
	initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2secure.img
	append=" devfs=mount"
	vga=788
	read-only
other=/dev/fd0
	label=floppy
	unsafe
