No I didn't. I'm reading over rpjday's minihowto now and I noticed that I
didn't do that. So I'm doing that step (initrd) now.

Thanks to you both! I'll let you know what happens.

Hmm. Have you used mkinitrd to make a new initrd image for the
2.4.7-rv image?

mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.7-rv.img 2.4.7-10custom

(Check /lib/modules for the exact version)

then adjust lilo.conf apropriately and re-run lilo -v

FWIW, GRUB is much easier to deal with. it als supports on-the fly
editing of kernel/boot options. Type in your "root=" specifier? Just
hit "e" on the boot selection and fix it! Want to boot an unlisted
kernel? Just hit "c" to get a command line for booting....
