Hi Folks,

Turned out the problem was with the CD-ROM, not the installation.  The 
(enormous) pak0.pk3 file that had been copied to my baseq directory was 
only a fraction of its full size.  After a few attempts it copied in its 
entirety, and things work fine now.  No wonder I wasn't finding many 
similar complaints on line.

How, if they would only get the Nvidia driver to work in full screen 
mode...   ;-)
