[TriLUG] firewalls in Linux

I've noticed that all three of the various "strengths" of firewalls in
Mandrake-Linux positively prohibit newsgroup messages!! I'm approaching this
problem as a desktop user only. How do you protect your computer with a
firewall and still access newsgroups in USENET??? Or is this even possible??
I find this most curious considering the large number of LINUX newsgroups.
