[TriLUG] Modem speed problems

Roy, this may simply be a problem with your ISP!! For about a month now I've
been having this same problem with Mindspring.com at its Raleigh location
(not RTP or Durham). I've seen this happen often before. It is usually
caused by some bad modems or telephone lines. The only fix I know of is
simply to hang up and dial again and maybe even again until you happen to
get one of the "working modems"! This usually works because these large
ISP's have lots of modems in a large bank to service all the people who have
subscribed to their service. Since nothing lasts forever, especially when
it's heavily used, some of them go bad. Other than hanging up and dialing
again, the only other thing you can do is to complain to the ISP cashing
your monthly checks!!
Some of them can even run a trace on that line and figure out where the
problem is. Lately I've not had to dial up my ISP as often as a few weeks
ago, which means that either BellSouth or Mindspring (now called something
else I don't remember!) has fixed their stuff. Best of luck. It is also
possible that YOUR modem or telephone line is also bad!! Only fix there is
to replace the modem and see if the problem stops. Even your line can
repaired by yourself!! Sometimes the telephone wiring in one's home is so
old that it cannot give you the highest online speeds. The cure in that case
is to replace the wire with a heavier duty wire (preferably "Cat 5"
according to a friend who works for a well-known DIGITAL telephone company),
which you can find at just about any decent hardware store such as Home
Depot. Actually I've had great results in many cases just replacing my
modem. GOOD LUCK (I apologize for being verbose!!).--Alf.
