linuxconf has been fundamentally broken for a long time.  i remember 
someone from red hat showing me, as an example, that just the act
of invoking linuxconf, doing nothing, then *immediately* shutting
it down still caused changes in at least one system configuration
file.

the sooner linuxconf goes away, the better.
