[TriLUG] Trust up2date ?

( Another rookie question )

I have two web servers, one development, one production.  It seems
that the easiest thing to do to keep these machines current re:errata
and security alerts is to use up2date.  It seems to take less time
than tracing down all the dependencies I might not have up to date (
like now when I'm trying to update my ssh stuff ).  The only issue is
can I trust it not to render my machine(s) useless?

What do you, the experts, do ?
