You might find these two letters from the maintainer of the
emacs mode for mutt (Eric Kidd) interesting, though...
(His letter is the first one on the first URL, and a 
bit down the page on the second URL.)

Basically, he has abandoned Mutt in favor of evolution
and he gives his reasons why.
