I'm not sure that you can do this anyway. Most cable modem providers
insist that you use a specific type of cable modem on their lines for
provisioning purposes. It's easier to manage devices that have similar
MAC addresses than half a million variants. RoadRunner NC seems to like
Terayon and Toshiba cable modems, so far as I've seen. There may be
another brand or two out there, and some of the early adopters may still
have their own cable modem in use, however these days I'm not even sure
that RR allows users to use their own cable modems at all. In fact, I
doubt they do.

As for me, I have a Debian Woody box with two network cards acting as my
gateway. eth0 goes out to the cable modem, and eth1 goes to my hub. I
use iptables for firewalling and NAT translation, serve DHCP IP addresses
to each of my other machines, and I am working on providing a number of
network services for my internal clients. I've gotten network printing
configured using LPRng (it was easier than I expected), and I'm working on
hosting a website for my wife's business. I've already got the mail
services up and running for her.

Basically, my advice to you is to check with RR about whether or not you
can even use your own cable modem on their network. They may say no. As
for whether you can use it at all under Linux, I think that's a question
better answered after you get your reply from RR.
