I did not explain myself properly. I am trying to build the Redhat 7.2
kernel from the src.rpm because I am trying to update the Redhat 7.2
install RPMS. I need to do this because 2.4.7-10 (the RH7.2 kernel) does
not support my RAID controller. Kernels 2.4.12 and up do support it.
Unfortunately I only have a Mandrake 8.0 box available to compile the
kernel.

I am not sure that the Mandrake built 2.4.16 kernel will work well as
part of the RH7.2 install. Do you think/know if it will?
