Good call. I started reading Applied Cryptography, but haven't made it
very far. I
can tell you though, that it doesn't require a lot of math background to
understand,
at least in the earlier chapters. Schneier does a pretty good job of
avoiding
the extremely rigorous mathematics. Obviously if you expect to become a
crypto guru
you have to have some hellacious math knowledge.. but Applied Cryptography
boils
things down to an understandable level, for a layperson, IMO.

Another good call. I'm in the middle of that one now. Not a book for the
fainthearted, that's for sure. You wanna just tell me how it ends, so I
won't have to read the rest. :-)

And after that? Why "Java Cryptography" by O'Reilly, of course.

Kevin, if you haven't looked at it, you might also be interested in
"Disappearing Cryptography" by Peter Wayner. It's a pretty good
introduction
to steganography.

America is at war with Afghanistan. America has always been at war with
Afghanistan. Russia is our ally. Russia has always been our ally.

Read Orwell's 1984. Read a newspaper. Fear the future.

Those who are willing to sacrifice essential liberties for a little order,
will lose both and deserve neither. - Benjamin Franklin
