Star office (5.2+) has a far more correct implementation of Excel and from a
user standpoint the Word documents work nicely.

One note: gnumeric can load Excel 97 docs reasonably well, though they look
funny.  If you save them though you'll get a *mostly-excel-95* format that
will probably screw things up going back and forth.  Of course the worst
problem is that you can't use POI
