That would be because it won't mount a dirty filesystem
(that is, it must be fsck'd before it will mount it
read-write... )

Hmmm... Can you try booting from a floppy based distribution
(or the redhat rescue CD) and try to fix it using that.  If 
you can get your partition fsck'd and mount it read-write,
you can remove that swap line from the fstab...
