[TriLUG] Red Hat 7.3 - pricing & alternatives

Hello

Well, a dead nvram means it doesn't keep its settings when its turned off.
That's the problem I have.
Whereas a dead prom means it can't boot period. You can probably get a
replacement nvram from mouser.
A replacement prom requires a working prom to be copied. Which is why you
have ebay flooded with ss10/20 2.25 proms. Somebody
bought one, copied it a dozen times and then setup shop on ebay.

If you are interested, I have two sparcs in my closet gathering dust.

A sparc 10 with dual 40mhz cpus. I removed the memory and put it in my
sparc 20. I think the 10 only has 32 or 64 meg now.
A sparc 5 110Mhz with TGX card. It has 256 or 192 Megs of memory.

I dont want to give these away, since each one makes a good server. Make
a reasonable offer and they are yours.

One more thing to keep in mind about ss5 and ss20's. They can use newer
SCA-2 hard disks in compatible mode. My ss20 has
a brand new LVD 9GB disk in it. I paid $60 for it. Five year warranty,
10K RPM, 1MB cache. Gotta love it. If I were to buy a older SCA-1 drive,
I would pay that much (or more) and it would only be a 2 GB disk.

That would rule. Although I think it's just a dead prom battery, and
finding a new chip is a bit of a hassle.

That would rule even more *grin*

Please do. I want to play with some older sparcs, but working hardware
is becoming a problem.

If I can get both working, I may start playing with beowulf or similar
stuff *grin*
