[TriLUG] And while I'm on the subject of new LINUX items now available in our local area...

Went into Borders bookstore yesterday and was looking around in the
periodicals section for Linux Format magazine. I collect them because they
have great software disks with them (although I'm so pathetic I don't even
know how to use them yet), and now they are putting TWO CD's with each
month's magazine.
The April 2002 issue is now available. Cover topic is "Superior
Networking..Safer, more reliable, secure..."

But as always, Linux Format has lots of tutorials for newbies, and lots of
stuff for desktop users. This month they compare all the popular DVD players
and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each. There are also reviews
of Varicad, Sorcerer Linux, Omnis, et al. Tutorials are given on Wireless
Networking, Kpresenter, Apache, CVS, Perl, Java, Kylix (one of the disks
contains Kylix 2 and Sorcerer Linux, as well as Opera 6 beta, Endeavour MkII
and Evolution 1.0.2). There are too many other programs available I don't
have the inclination or time to give them all. Keep in mind that Borders now
has a 10% off everything card which you can purchase to save you money on
Linux Format magazine each month (ca. $1.40 saved each month). When you get
your 10% card you also get TWO free tickets to the movies so you can take
your wife or girlfriend out one night (assuming you can find something worth
watching), which covers about half the cost of your 10% card.
NO, I DEFINITELY DO NOT WORK FOR BORDERS!!!

Linux Format also publishes an issue with a DVD disk included with a lot
more software on it (many times they include entire new Linux distributions
on these DVD's, e.g. Mandrake 8.2, etc.). It would be nice if Trilug could
collect these DVD disks in some sort of library. At the least we could try
some new distributions that aren't well-known.
Finally, there is a listing in the back of Linux Format of Linux groups
in Britain and also world-wide. We can even list Tri-lug, because there are
a lot of other US Linux groups much smaller than ours listed. Unfortunately,
I don't know enough about our group to give the necessary information, so
this would have to be undertaken by someone else who has that information.
     So, Bon Appetit!!

P.S. Tried to load Red Hat 7.0, which I got from a book which teaches Linux
step by step. I was getting I/O errors and it wouldn't load. Then I happened
to look more closely at the disk causing the problem, and discovered it had
streaks of glue on it. I'd like to say that after I cleaned off the glue
with dishwashing detergent and a little WD-40 that it worked then, but alas
it did not. So a word of warning, carefully check disks included with Linux
books when you buy them, you might not want the one you've picked out to
buy. Apparently book publishers get glue everywhere during the publishing
process.
