Your story _completely_ corroborates with the story my ex-coworker told about 
her experience in identity theft.

My guess as to why it's such a gut-wrenching process is that the credit 
companies want to flush out the dead-beats that are posing as victims of 
identity theft.

Here's a possible solution to the cellphone concern.  I just signed up for 
tracfone prepaid service.  If you are not a power user, this is an 
alternative way to keep costs low. (www.tracfone.com)

Maybe the TriWUG can have a sensitive information sniffing contest to 
highlight the potential pitfalls of unprotected wireless LANs.  That wouldn't 
be ill-legal would it?
