Well, it's not just FCC laws on antenna placement (which, btw,
only cover placement of antennas near airports or national
radio quiet zones [think radio telescopes]) but rather the
FCC rulings on Effective Radiated Power.  Unlicensed transmissions
on 2.4 GHz are allowed up to a certain power level.  And, unfortunately 
for you, what type/placement of antenna you have figures into 
the ERP.  So, if you put up a large wi-fi antenna, you'd
probably go over the allowed ERP and be subject to FCC
sanctions, assuming you were ever caught, that is.
