xslt-proc?  That I do have on the Mandrake 8.1 disks.  You just have to know 
what to look for.  It installed OK.  I'll give it a shot.  Thanks for the 
hint.  I think that I was using the tree view instead of the flat list view 
in Mandrakes' Control Center Software Manager.  The tree view did not reveal 
the xslt tools in the same place it revealed the jade/sgml tools.

You give good reasons to learn both.  I'll report the outcome of loading 
xslt-proc package.
