Yes, its long-ish.  Yes, its written by the folks at the Java-lobby so
you know they have an axe to grind.  But nevertheless, the paper
presents a thorough and in-depth analysis.  There are some excellent and
deep points discussed (eg. nature of VMs) with a multitude of links to
further reading.
