System 7.1 and above use a differently formatted desktop file (if I
recall correctly). 'Desktop' vs. 'Desktop DB'.

You would want to back it up with a mac because you want to keep your
resource forks intact. The hfs driver works well (for reading
files). Mount your drive read only if you want to take this route.
