[TriLUG] playing audio cds w/ rh73?

okay, there's got to be a real simple clue here that i'm missing...

i just installed redhat 7.3 on my new box, and i'm trying to set it up to
play audio cds using the sound on the mobo (asus a7v333), with no luck so
far.

sndconfig sees the onboard sound as a PCI sound card - C-Media Electronics
Inc CM8738 - and i can hear the sound sample. i can also hear kde system
notifications (altho i'm turning them back off Right Now), and xmms can
play my mp3s.

however, neither kscd nor cdp can produce sound. i've tried this with
several different cds, so i don't think it's the media. both kscd and cdp
see my audio cd and start counting seconds like they're playing, but
nothing comes out. kscd looks the cds up on freedb for me, so i know it's
at least talking to the disc, but it seems that it's not talking to the
sound device.

i poked around in google, but haven't found anything useful. /dev/dsp is
owned by me; /etc/modules.conf has:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias eth0 3c59x
alias usb-controller usb-uhci
alias usb-controller1 ehci-hcd
alias sound-slot-0 cmpci
post-install sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -L >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
pre-remove sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -S >/dev/null 2>&1 || :

which is all greek to me. *wry grin*

any suggestions will be much greatly appreciated! (other than the obvious
one of ripping all my cds - that's on the list, but not for today.)
