[TriLUG] *GASP* a linux problem :-) ddns, dhcpd

Haven't seen this before, but I did have some problems in the long ago that
went away when I defined the broadcast for the local network on the Linux
boxes.

If that doesn't help, then you could always resort to using reserved
addresses. We do that here and it works great.

Subject: [TriLUG] *GASP* a linux problem :-) ddns, dhcpd

I'm running into a little problem at work and I'm wondering if anyone
here has seen it before. I've got an ISC dhcpd and named running on the
same server. It's all pretty much running well, with dhcpd updating
named (aka ddns) for all of the Windows clients. The problem is that
none of the Linux clients are submitting their hostnames to dhcpd (or so
it would appear in /var/log/messages).

Here's what a good transaction looks like in /var/log/messages :

Aug 1 08:17:04 vger dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:60:08:18:42:6e
(9SINGOFF) via eth0
Aug 1 08:17:05 vger dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 192.168.10.181 to
00:60:08:18:42:6e (9SINGOFF) via eth0
Aug 1 08:17:05 vger dhcpd: if IN A 9SINGOFF.easternrad.priv domain
doesn't exist add 1800 IN A 9SINGOFF.easternrad.priv 192.168.10.181 add
1800 IN TXT 9SINGOFF.easternrad.priv
"311d3eb3ea516c99cd72cec72c0159a247": success.
Aug 1 08:17:05 vger dhcpd: delete IN PTR 181.10.168.192.in-addr.arpa.
add 1800 IN PTR 181.10.168.192.in-addr.arpa. 9SINGOFF.easternrad.priv:
success.
Aug 1 12:17:05 vger named[1289]: zone easternrad.priv/IN: sending
notifies (serial 468)

And here's what a Linux client transaction looks like:

Jul 31 17:39:15 vger dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 192.168.10.102 from
00:02:a5:de:bf:b6 via eth0
Jul 31 17:39:15 vger dhcpd: DHCPACK on 192.168.10.102 to
00:02:a5:de:bf:b6 via eth0

This is true of Mandrake & Red Hat clients. None of them end up getting
entries in the DNS tables because of this. Anyone seen this before?
