The next meeting of the Triangle Linux Users Group (TriLUG)
will be Thursday, August 8, 2002 at 7:00pm in the Dreyfus
auditorium of RTI (please see http://trilug.org for directions).
This month, we have one of our own members, Mike Johnson, giving
a talk on TiVo, including the incredible hacking possibilities of
these nifty Linux based devices. So, please come and join us!
As always, meetings are free, as is the pizza!

This meeting could also be called 'When Worlds Collide'. The TiVo
appliance is probably the most wide spread embedded Linux system. It's
been an interesting path, watching a company build a business around a
system that is so powerful, and so approachable. Given the internals of
this device, it didn't take long for the hackers to catch on, making it
do things it was not originally designed for. The company could have
taken many steps to limit, or otherwise stop the hacking, but they've
embraced it! TiVo representatives participate in message boards where
hacks are developed, discussed, and refined. The four letter word
(DMCA) has never been a consideration, it would seem, with no threats
from the company towards the hackers.

So, come on down and see what happens when worlds collide.

The presentation is avilable at: http://www.trilug.org/~mike/tivotalk/

No slides will be put up on the screen, instead there will be live
demonstrations on the big screen, so make a print out to bring with you.

Mike, speaker and PR.

PS The speaker is really, really cool.
