I've had good luck with Promise add-on controllers. The ones
built onto newer motherboards, however, I hear can be
problematic.

As a side note, Red Hat generally has excellent support for
Promise add-on controllers (and sometimes those pesky built-in
ones as well) in their newer kernels.
