Hello trilugers!
This is not the beginning of a spamfest or anything. I was told of some
interest in your group about Mac OS X, and thought I'd build a bridge
from my side. If you're not interested in Mac OS X, hit delete now.
Nothing more to interest you, and I promise to stay on-topic from now
on.
My name is Smythe Richbourg, and I'm the current president of the
Triangle Macintosh Users Group. I make no pretense of being a UNIX,
Linux, or any other _IX user: I'm a Mac guy. But I love user groups and
encouraging community, and I've heard from reliable sources that you
folks think that way as well. So, in the spirit of community, I wanted
to officially open our doors in welcome to any and all who are
interested in exploring the UNIX side of Mac OS X.
In TMUG, we run the gamut, from those who still have that ten-year-old
68000-based Mac to those with UNIX, development, and programming
backgrounds. While that's a wide span, I must say that many folks
support the group and participate regularly that are either bored or
challenged at least during some of the meetings. And then, there are
those who run screaming from some meetings, vowing never to come back
because it's too banal or too esoteric. We just keep trying to educate
and stretch some, while giving others a bit of candy every now and
again with a higher-level meeting.
Our next meeting, which is this coming Monday, September 9, will be a
full exploration of OS X 10.2 (aka Jaguar) led by Francis Shepherd, a
Senior Systems Engineer with Apple. He's a lot of fun, and will cover
all the new bells and whistles. But he's spent a good bit of time on a
command line as well, and I know that some of this will be in his
preso. I would like any of you that are interested to be our guests. (I
don't know if I've just invited 50 or 6000, but I stand by it. Glad I
don't have to cook!) In spite of the difference in the level of
proficiency between the two groups, I'd like to see what we can do
toward sharing resources. There are those in our group that could learn
a lot from ya'll.
Recently, we've been re-vamping our moribund SIGs. Two of these may
prove interesting to you folks:
a Developer's/Programmers SIG and
a group that is specifically focused on the OS X terminal and the BSD
roots of this new beast in our camp.
Another item of interest to you may be the "Lulu's Tech Circus" that
Bob Young (of Red Hat fame) is planning for Sept 27 - 29th in Dorton
Arena (in Raleigh). It will have a Mac training area as well. This will
be stocked with new Macs (25, at last count) and some video cameras for
teaching visitors about Apple's free "iApps" (iPhoto and iMovie), plus
Final Cut Pro, the professional level video editing software. Plans are
to discuss and demonstrate open source software in this room during one
session as well. If you're attending the Circus, give it a look. TMUG
will have a table there, too.
In one of the earlier posts, someone mentioned dues. Yes, we have
annual dues of $35. This covers a newsletter, web presence, and
anything extra we decide we need. Currently we have a rather nice
projector that we bought. And we throw ourselves a holiday party in
December. But dues are not mandatory if you'd just like to visit a time
or two. It would give us all a wider network, maybe some business could
flow across the borders, and, who knows, maybe we could start some
other type of sharing. I hear you open source folks are into that. ;-)
Again, apologies if I'm out of line. I'm not trying to pull anyone out
of this group or HardCore (which, by the way, is a KILLER name!) I'm
only adding another option. Besides, what else is there to do on a
Monday night??
TMUG (www.tmug.org)
regular monthly meeting is the second Monday of the month from 6 PM to
8 PM at the EPA building on the corner of Hwy. 54 and Alexander Drive
in RTP. For directions, check out www.tmug.org/location
Thanks for your time and consideration,
Smythe
