That's it - I happen to have ghost and am pleased with it.
I'm not disparaging dd, just offering something that works well for me.

My guess would be that the people recommending it have more
experience with ghost than dd. 

For myself, I've done exactly this thing using dd (two years ago,
in fact).  It's very easy and everything you need is already
installed. :-)  I might recommend you boot with a rescue CD
so that you can make sure the disk isn't being written to, but
it's not entirely necessary.
