I have no such luck.  I normally need to wait for them to roll a truck. 
And of course, they can never roll a truck the same day as the problem 
so I go for significant durations of time without any service (but 
since they aren't contiguous 24 hour blocks usually, they won't deduct 
that from my bill).

Not at all.

Even though it is slower, I would go running to DSL if it were 
available here (it's not).  I've even thought of setting up my own 
broadband ISP here in northern Orange County but would need to partner 
with someone that has deeper pockets than I to get it going.
