You may want to take a look @ /etc/syslog.conf and comment out the 
line(s) referring to /dev/tty* or /dev/console which redirect logging 
output to your console window.  (iirc /dev/console may be openbsd 
specific, but /dev/tty* will show up in your linux conf file)
