When we signed up for RR, they had two options - self install and them
install. They don't really care what you run on your computer as far as
operating system as long as you realize that they only support Windows.
In other words, if you ever have problems with the service and talk with
tech support - don't blow them away by saying you are running Linux.
Also remember that the tech support people are not used to dealing with
people who know their computers - so be patient with them until you can
get through the first two levels :)

We opted for the self install. Hubby was required to go to a free class
before he could pick up the cable modem, but we installed everything
here. No one had to come out until the cable to our house was cut.

They may have to come to your house to check the cable, install the
cable modem/router (business class = router), and make sure that you get
a signal. That's all though. As long as you have an ethernet card in
your computer already and can check the connection before they leave,
you should be ok. Those OS requirements and such are more for the people
who would faint at the sight of a motherboard - in those cases, the
technician would probably have to install an ethernet card (if one is
not built-in) and set up the computer for DHCP. So it kind of makes
sense that the technicians will only be able to support Windows.

YMMV with this since it was RR and not specifically Earthlink, but I
would imagine they have the same technicians installing both services.
Hope this helps!
