  There are lots of factors that go into the definition of a "server"
what it does is a thing to consider, but you can host a web server on a
laptop, that doesn't make it a server.  Yes, hardware does matter.  ;')
If you are putting a system on the network, say a file server for a
company that will be leaving it on 24x7, even if they don't use it for
that time, then a desktop system will fail sooner, it's just not
designed to handle it.  

If you want to talk about performance, then lets.  A slower CPU server
can easily out perform a fast desktop, it's about what it's designed to
do.  Faster, wider PCI buss, better PCI bridge set, better integrated
network adapters, better agents to predict failure of a disk.  There are
a load of components that you can add, it really depends on the need,
and if you really need 24x7, then don't go cheap. 


Good, fast cheap, you only get two.....
