You are SOOOOOOOOO right.  But, you can fight technology with politics.
Case in point...I work for a large software manufacturer who has taken
some steps in the last few years to make an enterprise class commitment
to Linux, and a HUGE investment in it.  

We are, as are most companies, in an expense crunch, so I had the bright
idea to move from Microsoft to Linux where we can to save $$.  In our
case, well over a million dollars a year in licensing & support.  I
proposed this to my boss who said, "Don't do it.  You'll open Pandora's
box, and once it's open, you'll not be able to close it.  There are
politics at work here that we don't know about."

I took his advice, but if the opportunity presents itself, and I can do
so with the approval of his boss, I will make a case for it.  As I have
learned before...you have to step carefully.
