[TriLUG] Tabe Backup Software

I have to give my disclaimer here as well...

I have been a Pre / Post Sales Engineer in Storage for the past four
years, and in IT for eleven years now (military time included). I have
sold, and have hands-on experience (including implementations) with....

1. Veritas NetBackup and Backup Exec
2. Legato NetWorker
3. BakBone NetVault
4. CommVault Galaxy
5. SyncSort Backup Express
6. BrightStor Enterprise Backup
7. BrightStor ARCserve Backup
8. BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Linux
9. Amamda

The fact is that none of the companies make bad software, or they
wouldn't be in business. And while the BrightStor line was not where it
needed to be with 6.61 and in some respects, 2000, the newest version
has gotten high reviews.

If you are looking for a cost-effective Linux solution that will backup
anything else with FULL support (UNIX, Linux, Windows, NetWare) then
look at ARCserve fro Linux. If you're backing up Windows machines, then
you'll like the built in virus scanning protection.

ARCserve for Linux also supports more Linux distributions at the server
level than any other commercial backup product. If you want a list,
I'll be happy to provide it.

Backup Exec has some good features, and it is a good product...but it is
not the only option.

It would be nice to see what they say week after next at the tntug.org
meeting about their Linux support for Bare Metal Recovery. Me thanks

Backup Exec doesn't support Linux as the server, but does support Linux
clients. So if you can live with your backup server being on Windows,
you can use it.

Disclaimer: I work for VERITAS, and regularly use their products. I was

a VERITAS customer before I worked for them, and was overall impressed
by their product line even before drinking the company supplied
beverages.

Peace.
