[TriLUG] Mozilla & Collapsing Threads (low topicality)

Hi Folks,

I recently grabbed Mozilla 1.4 to check out its spam (i.e. junk) mail
filtering capabilities. In doing so, I discovered that something I use
frequently has changed.

Any time I view mail or news in mozilla, the threads initially appear
expanded. I have to collapse them in order to scan the headings
conveniently.

In previous versions of Mozilla the forward slash ('/') char was the
keyboard command to collapse the threads. In this version, it's the
backslash ('\').

Unlike the forward slash key, there seems to be no standard location for
the backslash key on a keyboard. Each of the four systems I use
frequently has it in a different place.

None of this would be a problem if there was a way to tell Mozilla to
display threads collapsed by default. Is there a way to do that? I've
looked through the preferences and settings dialogs, and haven't found it.

Thanks. Apologies if anyone is bothered by the low topicality index.
