I imagine there will be a flood of responses, but just in case, the
answer is no, there is no performance hit.  You'll be fine.  Feel free
to leave it alone until the next upgrade.

in fact i think some distros have shipped smp kernels as their default kernel so that smp
users woulnd't have to worry about adjusting %bootmanager% or doing a dive for the keyboard.
