Hi,
Back at the last installfest several folks helped me get my smart card to work by removing Mandrake and putting RedHat on my machine.

What follows is a long message, so get your favorite drink and come back to settled in for a while.
The machine is a DELL XPS 300 with 288 meg, HP burner, 24x cdrom drive, smartcard reader, zip drive, HP 4 printer, and one UMAX 1200s scanner. Two harddrives with Windows 95 OSR2 on c:\ and on the slave I have a 12 gig linux partition and a separate swap partition right behind it. Both of these linux partitions are the last on the slave drive.
Oh, yea there is a monitor attached also.

The Red Hat wouldn't read my smartcard when I gone home. So, like a novice I put Mandrake back on and it read my smartcard. But not the printer or the zip drive. (If you haven't got your drink yet and been to the necessary room now is the time to go. From here on out it gets fast and long);)

So, now we have Mandrake back on. Still no printer or zip drive. Here is what I did and found. First from www.linuxprinter.org I read that with no printer install you have no chance of using the zip drive that is plugged in between the parallel port on the cpu and the HP 4. Also, I needed to have foomaticSo, at home (I use the library for Internet work.) I again went after Mandrake and ran PrintDrake for the first time. Before I had used the GUI to load the printer. The linuxprinter.org said I needed foomatic-rip and foomatic-qswrapper and perl in the /usr/bin directory. Now back to PrintDrake. What follows is from PrintDrake itself.

No foomatic on the Mandrake disk and later on another reinstall it gave me this error on Perl:

Perl-base-5.8.0-19mak.i586 could not be read from the install disk. So, no Perl.

I bought these disk at the hamfest a few months ago when trilug was there. Could that be the problem? These disk? Or is it a short between the keyboard and the back of my chair?

I stop now. But any advice would be of help. Please send e-mail to teajr at yahoo.com. And thanks in advance. I may be there at this coming Thursday meeting?

Take care,

Tom
