i did this at a client site a month or so ago.  they have a redhat 9 box 
with the stock version of samba acting as a domain controller, i set it 
up so that users could authenticate against the server and have roaming 
profiles.  local accounts on the workstations are not needed, machine 
accounts are automatically added, and each user has a seperate profile 
folder on the server.  a couple of registry hacks were required on the 
xp clients to get them working properly though, and it took some trial 
and error to get it working nicely.  but it is possible!
