Supposedly up2date has been known to break glibc updates.  Not having 
used up2date ever, I wouldn't know.

During the install you can signal which drives should be reformatted.  
Just make sure that /www is not checked.  You will need to make sure 
that that partition is mounted as /www, but that can also be done at 
installation.

However, if whomever rooted you put a trojan on that partition, you may 
be in the same boat in a few days.
